December 2018 - Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Kloosterboer is a well-known name when it comes to storage and transhipment at large-scale refrigeration and freezing locations in the Netherlands. Recently they expanded the Kloosterboer Delta Terminal on the Maasvlakte near Rotterdam. Van Wensen Elektrotechniek was commissioned to provide the electrical installation for the expansion. They appealed to panel builder Elektro Internationaal for the freezer-proof distribution panels.

The project involves the electrotechnical implementation of a third additional new construction site at the existing Kloosterboer Delta Terminal cooling / freezing complex at the Distripark Maasvlakte 1 in Rotterdam. The freeze warehouse with a total area of 10,000 m2 will be used for the storage of temperature controlled food products.

Expertise in the cooling branche
The electrical engineer Van Wensen BV was already in the picture with Kloosterboer because of their work on a previous satisfactory expansion on the complex. ’That is why we were also able to issue another quotation for this new building,’ says project manager Albert Eikelenboom. ’Based on our expertise in the cooling branche, we were able to make yet another good offer. Because our own expertise lies within the range of switchboards, we have asked our preffered partner to build the required distribution panels. That partner is Elektro Internationaal from Woerden. The short communication lines between our companies and the quality they deliver are deciding factors.’

Measure power
What makes this project extra special is that Kloosterboer strives for a BREEAM score in the ’outstanding’ category with this new location - without gas connection - and energy neutrality. To contribute to this, Van Wensen and Elektro Internationaal worked with Schneider Electric’s PowerLogic system. In the installation, these power meters are applied to the total of 25 incoming and outgoing groups to provide insight into the power consumption of the LED lighting, the automatic storage racks, the main components of the cooling system and the Reefer containers (cooling / freezing containers). the outside area. ’All information comes together in the main panel that we have designed and built’, says Jonathan van Eijk, calculator and planner at Elektro Internationaal.

Heating with thermostat
Elektro International supplied the main distributor in building form 4a in the Prisma P system from Schneider Electric. The main distributor is fitted with an extra high sealing of the cabinet. The cabinet built in IP55 provides a power of 3200A (50kA). Elektro Internationaal also built the 5 required sub-distributors in Prisma G, 3 of which are equipped with PLC control for the lighting plan in the offices and the halls. Four of the sub-distributors also had to be suitable to serve in a room where the temperature does not exceed -18 ° C. Van Eijk: ’These panels are equipped with heating elements with a thermostat, which ensures that the temperature in the panel can not drop below a predetermined temperature. The components of Schneider Electric are suitable for use within a large temperature range, but they work and consume optimally if it is not too hot and not too cold. Of course, the heating elements are also metered for power consumption.’

In addition, Elektro Internationaal supplied an additional sub-distributor in a plastic outdoor cabinet with rain roof from the Thalassa PLAZT product range. The panel is built like the other sub-distributors in IP55. The outside cabinet feeds the cooling containers in the outside area.

Consumption in picture
All consumption measurements - including those of the water meter, which gives a pulse that enters the main board - are transmitted to the PowerLogic software. The information is then fully translated into visual output thanks to the intervention of STbenelux, who asked EMS contract partner Global Power Technologies to work out all the details.

Extra safety
In addition, extra space has been reserved for the installation of extinguishing gas cylinders, which are connected on site to the central extinguishing system, in order to create extra safety for the stored goods in the freezer cells in the extreme case that a fire would occur in the panel.

All in all it is a great project to be able to work on with Van Wensen, Van Eijk summarizes . ’In industrial environments, in which sustainability is becoming more and more important, these types of intelligent distribution panels will soon become the standard.
